How Family Involvement Supports Recovery at Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch
Whether we are talking about substance abuse, mental health, or behavioral challenges, family support undeniably improves outcomes in recovery. According to a study published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, family involvement in treatment for adolescent substance abuse reduces relapse rates by 75% compared to a 50% success rate for individual-based interventions.
Similar studies have found that family-based therapy is more effective in treating depression in adolescence. Family involvement in treatment correlates to better outcomes for those suffering with chronic illnesses. And family therapy is nearly twice as effective when treating behavioral problems in adolescents.
At Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch, we believe that family involvement throughout the entire process is vital for long-term success so we’ve created a variety of opportunities to encourage families to find healing and renewal together.
Opportunities for Family Involvement
We understand how difficult it can be for families to place a child in residential treatment. While the separation and constructive use of the time apart can ultimately benefit the family, it is hard. It’s our goal to support long-term recovery by creating productive opportunities for family involvement. This includes:
- Family Communication
- Family Therapy
- Family RECONNECT Weekends
- Parent-Peer Support
Family Communication
Every family is unique in their preference for method and frequency of communication. At Teen Challenge Adventure Ranch, we aim to meet your needs while putting an emphasis on productive communication.
Weekly calls facilitated by the assigned case manager provide opportunities for families to stay in touch during treatment while also working toward a successful post-treatment transition. These calls are more casual and tactical than a family therapy session.
Family Therapy
Our licensed therapists facilitate family-based therapy sessions either via a video conference or in person depending on location and schedule availability of the family. These treatment services are designed to help families address important issues that might trigger substance abuse, poor mental health, or challenging behaviors.
Through family therapy, the client and his parents learn to communicate and trust one another, establishing a solid foundation for building a stronger, healthier relationship that supports long-term recovery.
Family RECONNECT Weekends
Throughout treatment, parents and clients participate in RECONNECT weekends. This is one day every other month when parents come to campus and spend the day engaging in therapeutic activities, fellowship, and worship with their teens.
These weekends are pivotal in rebuilding family relationships. Between parent-peer insight groups, family-based group therapy activities, and powerful praise and worship filled with testimony, every RECONNECT is worth every minute of time invested.
Parent-Peer Support
In addition to the opportunities to connect and support their teens in treatment, TCAR parents also receive an outpouring of community support from each other. Through facilitated book studies, parent email newsletters, and town halls, we spend a lot of time providing tools and resources that help parents explore the best ways to support their teen through recovery as well.
